Observation Narrative
Plot location: Rocky W-facing hillside at Brawner Farm Interpretive area, ca. 0.7 miles NE of jct.
Rock Types Present: Numerous spheroidal diabase boulders and stones.
A small but excellent example of fairly diverse oak-hickory forest occupying base-rich (high Ca, Mg, Mn) soils weathered from diabase. According to historical documentation by the Park Service, the low ridge at this site has been continuously forested from before the Civil War to the present. However, the stand was cut and probably grazed before the Park's establishment. Lonicera japonica and other weeds have also become established.
